Senate Republicans Push for Short-Term Funding Extension to Avert Government Shutdown
Senate Republicans have made a significant move to prevent a government shutdown, well ahead of the impending deadline. By striking bipartisan momentum, they have taken a crucial step towards keeping the government operational through the midterm elections and extending into early December.
The Senate has voted in support of the first procedural hurdle for a short-term funding extension. This move comes as Republicans are eager to avoid any government shutdown during pivotal November elections. The House GOP recently voted to defer the showdown over government funding until after the midterms.

Leading the charge, Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., emphasized the importance of moving forward with this extension. Although the deadline for government funding is September 30, Thune stressed the need for certainty and predictability amidst the last year’s unprecedented uncertainty.
Throughout President Donald Trump’s second term, Congress has experienced several shutdowns, including two of the longest in history. The first shutdown last year, over expired Obamacare tax subsidies, lasted over 40 days. A subsequent shutdown earlier this year, which lasted over 70 days, stemmed from Democrats opposing a bipartisan funding deal after immigration enforcement agents killed Renee Nicole Good.
At present, there is a bipartisan effort within the Senate to avoid another shutdown. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., supports the continuing resolution (CR), calling it a “responsible path forward” that maintains the focus on delivering a budget that benefits American families.

The upcoming 2026 midterms will be critical in determining control of the House and Senate, subsequently influencing President Trump’s legislative agenda for the final two years of his term.
Looking ahead, Republican leadership is optimistic about advancing the CR during the Senate’s final week prior to lawmakers returning to their home states. However, several other priority items await action as well.
Notable items include a package of over 70 nominees that Republicans aim to push through. There is the long-awaited Russia sanctions package and a crypto market structure package, which currently seems unlikely to progress. Additionally, the final confirmation vote for acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, Trump’s choice to lead the Department of Justice (DOJ), remains pending.
Senate Majority Leader Thune highlights the necessity of completing these tasks, saying, “I think we have a bunch of stuff we have to finish, and we’ll just stay until we finish it.”
