Senator Bill Cassidy’s loss in the Louisiana Republican Primary has sparked various responses from political figures. Former Utah Senator Mitt Romney expressed his disappointment, describing Cassidy’s defeat as “a loss for the country.” Cassidy, who had voted to convict former President Donald Trump in the impeachment trial concerning the January 6 Capitol attack, was described by Romney as an “exceptionally brilliant and creative mind,” highlighting Cassidy’s role as a leader in healthcare.
In the GOP primary, Trump-endorsed Rep. Julia Letlow and Louisiana Treasurer John Fleming surpassed Cassidy, advancing to the runoff for the Republican nomination. This marks Cassidy as the first elected Republican senator to lose renomination since Sen. Richard Lugar in 2012.
Former President Trump responded to Cassidy’s ousting with satisfaction, noting on Truth Social that Cassidy’s “political career is OVER.” Trump referenced Cassidy’s vote to convict him during the impeachment, labeling it a “disloyalty.”
Several Republican senators commented on the primary outcome. Sen. John Kennedy of Louisiana predicted Cassidy’s defeat, pointing to consistent polls showing troubles for Cassidy for over a year. Kennedy acknowledged Cassidy’s decision to run despite knowing the challenges posed by Trump’s endorsement of Letlow.
Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina argued that the GOP voters would penalize those who politically challenged Trump. Graham stated that aligning with Democrats to oppose Trump’s agenda or attempts to remove him from office would lead to political defeat within the Republican Party.
In his concession speech, Cassidy highlighted the importance of respecting democratic processes, urging against claims of stolen elections or baseless excuses. He thanked the voters for the chance to represent them during his term.
Fox News Digital’s Paul Steinhauser and CJ Womack provided additional insights for the report.
