President Donald Trump has returned from Beijing, highlighting improved trade relations with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Yet, a significant issue remains unsettled: Taiwan.
“Taiwan is the center of the global technology race,” stated Enes Kanter Freedom, a former NBA star, during a Zoom interview with Fox News Digital. Freedom emphasized Taiwan’s importance in the future of AI dominance, economic strength, and national security.
The former Boston Celtics player, known for his vocal stance on human rights and criticism of the Chinese Communist Party, highlighted the unresolved status of Taiwan as pivotal within America’s economic and national security strategy against China. Freedom remarked, “Trump has consistently recognized communist China as America’s most significant long-term geopolitical challenge.”
According to Freedom, peace is maintained through demonstrating strength. He called for robust American leadership to maintain stability in the Taiwan Strait, requiring a clear strategy and a strong deterrent to prevent authoritarian regimes from misunderstanding U.S. intentions.
A senior White House official mentioned that Trump would soon make a decision on a new arms package for Taiwan. Recently, Trump authorized $11.1 billion in arms sales to Taiwan, consistent with U.S. policies since the 1950s. This marks the highest arms sales to Taiwan during a U.S. presidential term.
Despite the ongoing negotiations, no progress was announced on Taiwan or other strategic issues. As Taiwan seeks U.S. weapons to bolster its defenses against a Chinese attack, Trump’s next move is being closely observed by both Beijing and Taipei.
During Trump’s recent visit to China, he was accompanied by American tech CEOs, signifying the importance of the U.S.-China rivalry in artificial intelligence, both economically and geopolitically.
Lai Ching-te, Taiwan’s President, expressed the significance of U.S. arms purchases in maintaining regional peace through a Facebook post. He emphasized how these relations, supported by the Taiwan Relations Act, affirm the U.S.’s security commitment to Taiwan.
Taiwan’s economy, military readiness, and future in AI are deeply linked with the United States. Freedom stressed that Taiwan is crucial not only for Asia but for the technological supremacy that will shape the coming century. He believes that Taiwan and America need each other.
The global semiconductor industry heavily relies on Taiwan, including companies like Apple, Nvidia, AMD, and Qualcomm. Ian Samson, a portfolio manager at Fidelity International, noted to Bloomberg the significant role Taiwan plays due to its dominant position in semiconductor manufacturing.
China has increased its military activity around Taiwan, heightening tensions. A spokesperson from China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs recently commented on X, asserting that Taiwan independence and cross-Strait peace are incompatible.
Freedom plans to visit Taiwan in October to organize basketball camps, aiming to inspire young athletes. He intends to broadcast his experiences in Taiwan to a global audience, showcasing Taiwan as a free, democratic society that stands against intimidation.
Freedom also aims to highlight China’s actions against various groups, including the Uyghurs, Hong Kongers, Tibetans, Falun Gong practitioners, and recently, the Taiwanese people.
