Senator Fetterman’s Concerns Over Socialists in Democratic Party

Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman expressed concerns about the increasing influence of socialists and communists within the Democratic Party. He pointed to figures like socialist streamer Hasan Piker, who he believes are steering the party in a more radical direction.

Fetterman stated, “I would never try to elevate a communist just because they have followers. This should be foreign to any Democrat.” His comments came after speaking at the Israel on Campus Coalition conference. Fetterman highlighted how Hasan Piker supports socialist candidates like New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, drawing attention to his praise for Mao Zedong and the Cuban regime.

Fetterman finds the party’s direction troubling. The recent primaries, according to him, are a test of whether Democrats will continue embracing progressive candidates. He criticized the move to embrace positions perceived as anti-Israel, citing California Governor Gavin Newsom’s description of Israel as an apartheid state, which Fetterman called false.

He elaborated, “It’s obvious that the party should not pander to the fringe. These are core values.” Fetterman emphasized the need to avoid catering to radical elements within the party. His comments align with concerns from others, including former President Donald Trump, who warned about the threat posed by what he termed “godless communists.” Trump suggested the Democrats have moved beyond socialism, calling for a new Communist Party.

Fetterman’s speech at the Israel on Campus Coalition event emphasized advocacy and education about U.S.-Israel relations and antisemitism. He noted how pro-Israel Democrats face pressure to defend their stance, with terms like “Zionist” being used negatively. Fetterman described Iran as another dividing issue within the party, supporting military action against Iran’s nuclear facilities, a position that breaks with most Senate Democrats.

Fetterman stated, “If you don’t want them to acquire a nuclear bomb, it’s reasonable to bomb their nuclear facilities.” He added that Iran remains a significant problem that American presidents have attempted to address for decades.
