Serena Williams shocked the tennis community by announcing her return to Wimbledon. At 44, the tennis icon accepted a wildcard for the tournament.
Williams secured the last women’s singles spot. This opening followed an update made earlier in the week. She had already earned a wildcard for doubles with her sister, Venus Williams. Earlier, she hinted at a singles comeback.
“You think I’m ready for singles? I need to get to work,” Serena remarked, according to Yahoo Sports.
Serena boasts seven Wimbledon singles titles. She still aims for Margaret Court’s record 24 Grand Slam wins, while she stands at 23.
Her last singles win was in 2019 at Wimbledon against Romania’s Simona Halep. Since reentering the sport after a four-year break, she has competed in just two doubles matches.
Williams’s illustrious career includes winning each Grand Slam, such as the Australian Open, French Open, and the U.S. Open, at least three times. Alongside Venus, she achieved the career “Golden Slam” in both singles and doubles.
Known worldwide, Serena reigns as the sport’s most famous female athlete. Fans globally eagerly await her performance in this year’s Wimbledon.
During the 2022 Wimbledon, Serena expressed uncertainty about future appearances. “Who knows where I’ll pop up?” she stated at the time. Williams had a wildcard for this event as well.
Serena excels on grass courts, winning 107 of 123 singles matches on the surface. This history bodes well for her comeback.
The draw will reveal her first-round opponent this Friday. The tournament starts on June 29.
