Passengers expecting to embark on a cruise to Alaska found themselves in an unexpected predicament when their trip was canceled. The Royal Caribbean cruise on the Serenade of the Seas, planned to depart from Vancouver, Canada, on August 30, was initially postponed to September 1 for maintenance. This decision, however, followed by another announcement canceling the trip after passengers had already boarded.
Initial communications suggested a condensed itinerary, but further technical issues kept the ship docked in Vancouver. Although guests could use the ship’s facilities, they turned their attention to booking return flights home. The cruise had planned visits to Sitka, Juneau, Ketchikan, and Prince Rupert.
“To accommodate ongoing maintenance, we’ve had to cancel our sailing. We apologize to our guests for the inconvenience and have worked with them to adjust their travel plans,” stated a Royal Caribbean Group spokesperson.
Royal Caribbean informed passengers about maintenance on August 22. The voyage was cut short to five days, offering guests various compensations such as refundable onboard credit and future cruise credit. Ultimately, the repairs took longer than expected and the ship remained in Vancouver.
Those affected received a full refund along with future cruise credits and reimbursement for flight-adjustment fees. The Serenade of the Seas, accommodating 2,143 guests, features amenities like floor-to-ceiling windows, a rock-climbing wall, a glass-domed solarium, and multiple dining options. This cancellation follows previous technical issues, including an engine problem in July 2025 and troubles in June where scheduled stops were missed.
Some frustrated passengers took to social media platforms to share their displeasure. Reddit users described their disappointment, with one user lamenting the failure of a celebratory cruise.
In response, some received refunds, future cruise credits, and other compensations. Sympathetic users also advised on enjoying time in Vancouver despite the setback.
Serenade of the Seas resumed its operations on September 6, hosting passengers for the next scheduled Alaska cruise. Royal Caribbean addressed the technical concerns to ensure future journeys proceed smoothly.
