Heavy rainfall struck New Jersey on Monday, leading to the partial collapse of the roof at a large retail store, as stated by local authorities. The incident occurred at BJ’s Wholesale Club in Ocean Township around 11:16 a.m., involving quick action by Ocean Township police, Monmouth County Sheriff’s deputies, and additional first responders.
At the time of the roof collapse, 27 individuals were inside the store. Fortunately, the two people who became partially trapped managed to extricate themselves and leave the building unharmed. Video footage from BJ’s Wholesale Club in Oakhurst shows significant flooding inside the store on Monday.
This situation highlights the fast and dangerous conditions that severe weather can create, according to Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden. He expressed pride in the rapid response and collaboration of first responders amidst the challenges posed by ongoing flooding and harsh weather conditions, ensuring the safety of all involved.
No injuries were reported from the incident. By early Monday afternoon, over 2 inches of rain was recorded in South Jersey, approximately 75 miles northwest of Philadelphia.
