Sharyn Alfonsi and Scott Pelley Join Columbia Journalism School

Sharyn Alfonsi and Scott Pelley, recently removed from CBS News’ ’60 Minutes’, will now contribute to Columbia Journalism School. The school announced their roles as Journalists in Residence for the upcoming academic year.

Both Alfonsi and Pelley left their positions amid changes led by CBS News’ editor-in-chief, Bari Weiss. They will mentor students, give lectures, and contribute to the Columbia Journalism Review. The school praised their track record in shaping national conversations for decades.

Jelani Cobb, the dean of the journalism school, commented on the quick decision to hire them after Pelley was dismissed. Cobb noted Pelléy’s confrontation with CBS News leadership concerning staffing changes, such as the replacement of the show’s executive producer.

Cobb emphasized recognizing available talent by recruiting them, highlighting the unparalleled nature of their investigative work.

Alfonsi expressed her enthusiasm for the new role and its unique timing. She stated her eagerness to guide the next generation of journalists in holding power accountable. Pelley remarked on the pivotal period for a free press and praised Columbia’s leadership in journalism training. Both expressed their honor to work with future journalists.

On Nov. 11, Alfonsi and Pelley will join a discussion moderated by Cobb. This session will explore their careers, significant stories, and ethical conflicts they navigated.
