In Montreal, an armed suspect with a long gun opened fire at a hotel on Monday, June 22, 2026. This tragic incident resulted in the death of a police officer before law enforcement returned fire, killing the shooter. A civilian also died during the event, and the origin of the fatal shot remains unclear.
According to Police Chief Fady Dagher, the shooting occurred in the Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood. Another officer sustained serious injuries but remains in stable condition. Chief Dagher stated this was the first time in 24 years that a Montreal police officer was killed on duty, describing the day as a nightmare.
It’s a very, very sad day. It’s a nightmare,Chief Dagher told reporters.
The police were alerted around 11:35 a.m. about an armed individual displaying a gun at the Hilton hotel window. Upon arrival, officers faced gunfire. Witness videos depict a person outside the hotel, dressed in an olive-colored jacket and cargo pants, exchanging fire with police. This individual was eventually shot down while possibly reloading their weapon.
The fallen officer has been identified as Constable Mohamed Lamine Benredouan, 34, who joined the force in 2021. Social media videos show the intense exchange of gunfire, capturing both a civilian and an officer getting shot.
Jacob Coutu, a construction worker near the scene, reported hearing initial gunshots followed by a significant police presence and further gunfire. He estimates hearing 30 to 40 shots total.
Public safety officials issued alerts instructing residents to remain indoors due to the armed and dangerous suspect in the area. The incident led to temporary closures on the Décarie expressway and sections of two major subway lines.
Quebec Domestic Security Minister Ian Lafrenière refrained from commenting on the suspect’s identity and motives, citing an ongoing investigation by an independent police watchdog. This body looks into incidents involving police-related injuries and deaths. Lafrenière confirmed that multiple agencies, including the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, were consulted and confirmed that the event was not terror-related.
Minister Lafrenière also urged the public to respect the victims by not sharing the videos of the incident circulating online. Meanwhile, police forces across British Columbia were warned of potential threats targeting officers, following the dreadful occurrence in Montreal.
