Significant Events in Chicago on September 1
September 1, 1982 marked a milestone in Illinois’ history. The state celebrated the completion of the State of Illinois Center, which was the costliest building project in Illinois back then, valued at over $172 million. A ceremony featured architect Helmut Jahn, Governor Jim Thompson, Mayor Jane Byrne, and Archbishop Joseph Bernardin. Governor Thompson later occupied the building in November 1984. It was renamed the Thompson Center in 1993, with his office featuring historical elements like a desk from the Chicago Historical Society and bulletproof glass for security.
September 1, 1961, witnessed a tragic event. Loose bolts led to a TWA Constellation plane crash near Clarendon Hills, Illinois, shortly after departing from Midway International Airport. All 78 onboard lost their lives.
Chicago’s Historical Milestones
In 1880, Rome elevated Chicago’s Diocese to an archdiocese, appointing Bishop Patrick Feehan as its first archbishop. This gesture enhanced Chicago’s spiritual prominence in the region.
1909 saw the birth of a new citywide grid system centered around State and Madison streets, facilitating navigation throughout Chicago. Proposed by Edward Brennan, this system transformed addressing and extended influence to various suburbs.
The Chicago Bears embarked on a new chapter in 1933, conducting their training camp out of town for the first time. Hosted by the University of Notre Dame, the absence of ‘Red Grange’ was notable.
In 1984, a new ordinance mandated smoke detectors in Chicago multi-unit residences. This law sought to reduce fire-related fatalities, spearheaded by Fire Commissioner Louis Galante amidst lobbying against the smoke detector industry.
1989 witnessed the designation of the Tully monster as Illinois’ official state fossil after legislation delayed for nearly two years was signed by Governor Jim Thompson.
Mae Jemison, a Chicago-raised astronaut, made history in 1992 as the first Black woman to venture into space. She achieved this on the STS-47 Spacelab J mission aboard Endeavour.
Modern Chicago Events
In 2015, Fox Lake police Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz was found dead under suspicious circumstances. Initially suspected of murder, investigations revealed that Gliniewicz had staged his death amid fears of exposure for embezzling funds from a youth policing program.
2018 was marked by the Chicago Bears acquiring Khalil Mack from the Oakland Raiders. This trade signaled a rebuild, bringing promises of a strong defensive presence. Mack’s tenure included notable statistics like 36 sacks and 14 forced fumbles over four seasons. In March 2022, the Bears traded Mack to the Los Angeles Chargers for several draft picks.
