Smithsonian Institution Faces Criticism Over Historical Presentation
Accusations of Divisive Agenda
Fox News host Laura Ingraham has accused the Smithsonian Institution of promoting a divisive agenda through ‘restorative history.’ Ingraham highlighted National Museum of American History director Anthea Hartig’s testimony regarding the museum’s educational materials and exhibits, such as an alleged ‘fetish attire’ display. She questioned the use of taxpayer funds for such programs.
Trump Administration’s Concerns
The Trump administration declared it found evidence of the Smithsonian Institution violating federal nondiscrimination laws. According to a Department of the Interior letter, the institution’s culture might have led to significant violations.
The letter noted possible creation of a hostile work environment and practices classifying individuals based on race and ethnicity. Although specific evidence was not included, critics have pointed to diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives as discriminatory.
Executive Order and Leadership
President Donald Trump publicly criticized the Smithsonian, accusing it of ‘woke’ ideology. An executive order, signed in 2025, aimed to remove perceived improper ideology from the museum.
A DOI spokesperson confirmed the order’s call to restore trust in the institution. Conservatives argue that the Smithsonian’s presentations reflect progressive ideology.
Financial and Structural Implications
The administration threatened to withdraw support unless changes are made. The Smithsonian receives about $1 billion annually in federal funding. Without proper response, the administration might end artifact loans, procurement processes, and grants.
The organization operates independently but is overseen by a board with presidential appointees. Upcoming vacancies could provide leverage over the institution.
Discussions and Testimonies
The DOI requested meetings to discuss alleged bias and civil rights violations. In congressional hearings, Anthea Hartig stated the museum does not take political sides but preserves American history for public interpretation.
Leadership at the museum reportedly has backgrounds in liberal advocacy or Democratic politics, which critics link to perceived biased exhibits.
The Smithsonian declined to comment about the letter when contacted.
