The political landscape in New York’s 13th Congressional District has shifted dramatically following the recent election. Darializa Avila Chevalier, a controversial socialist candidate, defeated five-term Democratic incumbent Rep. Adriano Espaillat.

Avila Chevalier, age 32, has stirred significant debate due to her past statements and political stances. Known for her activism, she studied at Columbia University and was linked to the Columbia University Apartheid Divest organization. This group famously posted provocative messages on social media, including phrases like “Death to America.” Her stance on private property, policing, borders, and the nationalization of private sectors has drawn scrutiny. These views were shared in now-deleted posts from 2018 to 2022.

Avila Chevalier has reportedly called for abolishing borders, prisons, and police, describing these actions as “possible, necessary, and the only moral way forward.” She expressed her belief against deportation, stating, “Yes, literally abolish the border.” Her comments have included labeling the United States a “disgrace” and expressing disdain for national symbols, reportedly wiping her hand on the American flag after forgetting napkins.

Additionally, she targeted prominent political figures with harsh criticisms. Statements from Avila Chevalier reportedly attacked former President Joe Biden, characterized as a “rapist” and “war criminal,” criticized Sen. Bernie Sanders for “liberal Zionism,” and dismissed Kamala Harris with derogatory remarks.

Her campaign secured notable endorsements, including support from New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Despite her controversial rhetoric, Mamdani emphasized transformative aspects of Avila Chevalier’s political message. He expressed confidence in her evolving views and commitment to championing New Yorkers against displacement and unjust detainment.
