Sonny Rollins, a towering figure in post-World War II jazz, passed away at his residence in Woodstock, N.Y. He was 95 years old. His publicist, Terri Hinte, confirmed his death on Monday through a formal statement. Rollins distinguished himself through his distinct musical approach and vibrant personality, achieving a unique status in a genre that values individuality.
In the late 1940s, jazz saxophonists typically preferred lighter tones and minimal vibrato. Contrary to this trend, Rollins embraced a robust, rich sound reminiscent of the earlier style established by Coleman Hawkins, jazz’s first renowned tenor saxophonist. During the late 1950s, amidst rising success as a bandleader, Rollins voluntarily took a hiatus exceeding two years. He later revealed his dissatisfaction with his performance quality as the reason behind this break.
Rollins matured in the era of bebop, a novel form of jazz characterized by harmonic sophistication and daring rhythms. Though his artistry was deeply immersed in bebop influences, labeling him solely as a bebopper fails to capture his musical breadth. Rollins explored avant-garde jazz, jazz-rock fusion, and various other styles throughout his career. Despite these ventures, his intense vitality, unique inclination to play surprising notes at unexpected moments, and his distinctive sound — alternating between harshly mocking and lushly romantic — resisted conventional classification.
Sonny Rollins’ legacy remains unclassifiable due to his versatility and relentless exploration of musical boundaries. His final performance took place at the Detroit Jazz Festival in 2012. Two years later, he decided to cease playing altogether, leaving behind a profound impact on the world of jazz.
