SpaceX Rocket Fragment Hits Moon, Raising Concerns Over Lunar Debris
A SpaceX rocket segment, which launched a pair of lunar landers, collided with the moon, according to scientists. Although the 5,400 mph (8,700 kph) impact was not directly observed, a telescope in Chile captured a debris plume from the crash. Experts noted that the leftover rocket segment’s collision with the moon was inevitable.
Lunar Debris Concerns
Lunar debris, a growing issue, may become more problematic as the U.S. and China continue lunar explorations. In 2022, a Chinese rocket inadvertently struck the moon. Other unrecorded collisions likely occurred over decades. SpaceX’s Julianna Scheiman stated that the company, working with NASA, aims to prevent future incidents. The collision resulted from unpredictable factors, including solar activity and gravity.
Observations Confirm Crash
Carl Schmidt from Boston University expressed certainty that their observations confirmed the crash. The European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope detected sodium and lithium streams from the impact site, stretching for miles within minutes. Schmidt stated there were no direct impact images but confirmed other telescope evidence.
Impact Predictions and Observations
Retired astrophysicist Jonathan McDowell had predicted the collision as the rocket segment headed toward the moon’s surface. The speculated crash site was near Einstein Crater, in a difficult-to-observe area. McDowell affirmed that the rocket is now scattered in pieces. Despite attempts to observe the impact from telescopes, many stargazers were unsuccessful, including Dutch scientist Marco Langbroek.
Visual confirmation of the crash must wait for NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter’s flyover next week. This event occurred after the Falcon rocket’s upper stage launched two private lunar landers on January 15, 2025, from Cape Canaveral.
Future of Lunar Exploration
The moon is becoming a key destination as NASA plans a surge of robotic missions. These missions aim to establish a sustainable lunar base. SpaceX and Blue Origin will provide landers for NASA’s Artemis program. Elon Musk’s SpaceX Starship is progressing well. Meanwhile, Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin has yet to launch. A rehearsal for Artemis III includes docking and a possible lunar landing by 2028.
Jonathan McDowell observed that with increased lunar activity, such impacts are unacceptable due to potential debris and dust. NASA and commercial partners need to ensure safe landings and avoid future collisions.
