SpaceX’s Historic IPO and Its Potential Impact

Tom Mueller, SpaceX’s first employee and a key aerospace engineer, shared his experiences and insights with CBS News senior business and technology correspondent Jo Ling Kent. Mueller, who had a strong interest in model rockets, met Elon Musk through an amateur rocket club. Musk convinced Mueller to join SpaceX, which Mueller described as one of the best decisions of his life.

The historic initial public offering of SpaceX is on the horizon, with Mueller highlighting Musk’s entrepreneurial skills and talent for energizing and finding talented individuals. Mueller believed in the company’s future and stated, “We believed it and we did it. So, it was really cool.” He, along with other SpaceX stakeholders, stands to benefit significantly from the upcoming IPO, which is poised to be the largest in history.

SpaceX’s success, reflected in the impending IPO, has greatly benefited its employees, including Mueller. Elon Musk, the richest person in the world, with a net worth of nearly $700 billion, could become the world’s first trillionaire with the company’s public offering. Mueller expressed confidence in Musk’s vision, particularly in developing the Falcon 9 rocket, which reduced space travel costs effectively.

After his tenure at SpaceX, Mueller founded Impulse Space, a company focused on services like moving satellites and delivering payloads in space. He remains an active proponent of space exploration, emphasizing its benefits for life on Earth, including advancements in GPS and weather forecasting. Mueller sees great potential for future space developments, such as orbital data centers and utilizing lunar and asteroid resources. “The space industry is just really going to take off from here,” he noted.
