Spanish Leader’s Former Ally Sentenced to 24 Years
A Spanish court has sentenced José Luis Ábalos, a former top official of the Socialist Party and transportation minister under Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, to 24 years in prison. The charges include bribery, embezzlement, and criminal organization.
Ábalos held significant influence over Spain’s budget during his tenure. His conviction adds pressure to Sánchez’s administration, already grappling with multiple investigations involving his associates and family.
Another individual involved, Koldo García, a former driver turned government fixer, was sentenced to 19 years. He admitted to collecting bribes on behalf of Ábalos. Both men had pleaded not guilty.
The outcome is a setback for Sánchez, who has promoted himself internationally as a progressive leader. Domestically, however, his network faces increased scrutiny.
Several legal proceedings concern Sánchez’s close associates:
- Begoña Gómez: Sánchez’s wife, charged with corruption and influence peddling, must surrender her passport pending trial.
- David Sánchez: Sánchez’s brother is on trial for allegedly securing a patronage position.
- José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero: Former prime minister accused of receiving kickbacks for aiding an airline bailout.
The Socialist Party’s headquarters were recently searched in connection to a campaign supposedly led against investigating judges.
Sánchez dismisses the charges against his wife and brother as politically driven. He continues to support Zapatero. However, Sánchez is keen to dissociate from Ábalos.
