Spider-Man: Brand New Day made history in theaters during its opening weekend, becoming the second-largest North American debut ever with $355 million in ticket sales. This placed it just below Avengers: Endgame, which launched with $357 million in 2019. The film also garnered $572 million from over 73,500 international screens, with China contributing $121 million. This resulted in a worldwide debut of $927 million, second only to Endgame’s $1.2 billion.
Tom Holland’s portrayal of the webslinger continues to impress audiences. No Way Home, his third standalone Spider-Man film, grossed over $1.9 billion worldwide, ranking as the eighth-highest earner ever, unadjusted for inflation. It was also the first film during the pandemic to exceed $1 billion in box office revenue.
Aside from Spider-Man’s success, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey fell to second place with $51 million in its third weekend. These films contributed to record-breaking ticket sales of $430 million in North American theaters, according to Rentrak.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day set records with a $168 million opening day across 4,487 theaters in the U.S. and Canada, surpassing Endgame’s $157 million Friday. The studio projected a $325 million weekend, which would have still ranked as the second-largest opening. This new entry replaces Spider-Man: No Way Home’s $260 million debut in December 2021. Following are Avengers: Infinity War ($257 million, 2018) and Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($247 million, 2015) in the ranking of top North American opening weekends.
Despite costing $225 million to produce, not counting marketing, Brand New Day exceeded expectations. Critics and audiences responded favorably, reflected in its 90% Rotten Tomatoes score and an ‘A’ CinemaScore. Audience demographics showed a male majority (61%), with half under age 25. The largest group was aged 18-24, comprising 36% of viewers.
Analysts at EntTelligence estimate 24.1 million viewers attended Spider-Man: Brand New Day over the weekend. It marked Sony Pictures’ largest opening ever. Tom Rothman, CEO of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, praised Tom Holland, whose shooting schedule was adjusted to accommodate his role in The Odyssey.
Marvel Studios president and Spider-Man producer Kevin Feige commented on the film’s launch, noting its reflection of Marvel’s character strength and global fan connection. Producer Amy Pascal observed that audiences crave stories with both spectacle and depth.
This year also witnessed renewed interest from younger viewers, driving hits like Obsession and The Drama, which stars Zendaya. These films, alongside Spider-Man, are boosting blockbusters in a promising summer for movie theaters. The Odyssey, experiencing a modest 43% decline in its third weekend, has achieved $395.5 million domestically, leading to a $911.4 million global total. Scheduled releases in South Korea, China, and Japan are anticipated to further elevate its earnings.
Other top films included Toy Story 5, which earned $6.3 million, and Hadestown: The Musical, which set a record for live theater capture releases with a total of $18.2 million.
Paul Dergarabedian from Rentrak suggests the success of Spider-Man could help summer box office revenues surpass $4 billion, a feat last achieved during the summer of 2023. He highlights August as a crucial period likely to exceed $10 billion for the year.
