St. Charles North’s Ben Auer Emerges as Ace Pitcher
St. Charles North’s baseball team found an unforeseen ace in Ben Auer this spring. The team had lost its top pitchers, Keaton Reinke due to early graduation and Matt Ritchie owing to injury, and Auer rose to the challenge.
Auer embraced his new role, gaining confidence with each game. In the recent Class 4A St. Charles North Regional championship, Auer showcased his skills, striking out seven batters, giving up only five hits, and allowing just one run over five innings. His performance led the team to a 3-2 victory over South Elgin.
Not only did Auer deliver on the mound, but he also excelled at the plate, going 3-for-4 and driving in two runs. Teammate Ty Gleason contributed with two hits, including a double. Reed Raczka tripled and scored twice, while Josh Kobylinski secured the win by retiring the final five batters.
St. Charles North, with a record of 22-12-1, celebrated their 11th regional title. Next, they face Huntley in the McHenry Sectional semifinals. Coach Todd Genke praised Auer’s journey from a role player to a key contributor, noting his impressive development and competitive spirit.
Key to this success was Auer’s leadership, which provided stability to the team. Fellow player Kobylinski noted that Auer’s presence allowed others to settle into their roles more naturally.
South Elgin’s Zacharia Barkho kept the game competitive, matching Auer with seven strikeouts over six innings, giving up two earned runs. South Elgin’s Alex Muro also provided key hits and an RBI in the tight contest.
Auer’s determination was evident as he navigated challenges, especially when Muro’s single reduced the lead. Auer struck out a crucial batter to diffuse the situation before turning over to the bullpen.
Reflecting on the win, Auer expressed satisfaction in avenging last year’s loss to South Elgin and looked forward to the next game. His determination to prepare mentally and physically demonstrated his commitment. Kobylinski’s reliable closing performance also highlighted the trust within the team.
South Elgin coach David Palmer respected Auer’s and Barkho’s performances, expecting such a display in playoff situations. Auer’s enthusiasm for competitive play remains high as St. Charles North progresses in the tournament.
