PSG’s head coach, Luis Enrique, celebrated with players after winning the Champions League final against Arsenal. The match took place in Budapest, Hungary, on May 30, 2026. This victory makes PSG back-to-back European champions after their dramatic win over Arsenal in a penalty shootout, ending 1-1 after extra time.
Captain Marquinhos expressed his excitement, saying, “From the start of the season, the coach said winning is hard and winning twice is even harder. We had to get back to work with that mentality.” Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes missed the last penalty, sealing PSG’s victory. PSG is one of the few teams, besides Real Madrid, to retain the trophy in modern times.
Luis Enrique, now a three-time winning coach, crafted a team that outperformed Europe’s strongest clubs. Arsenal topped the Premier League and led the Champions League’s first stage, yet PSG’s performance at Puskas Arena proved their dominance.
“It’s special because we knew how tough it would be,” Enrique stated. “It’s deserved over the season, even though the final was closely contested.” Unlike last year, where PSG defeated Inter Milan 5-0, they faced a challenging Arsenal, known for having the best defense in the competition.
PSG struggled after falling behind to Kai Havertz’s goal but levelled when Ousmane Dembélé scored a penalty. This took the final to extra time, the first instance in a decade.
Elite Company
By securing back-to-back wins, Luis Enrique achieved what his peer Pep Guardiola couldn’t in his time at Barcelona and Manchester City. Enrique joins a list of coaches with at least three European Cups, alongside names like Carlo Ancelotti and Zinedine Zidane. Looking ahead, Enrique aims to match Madrid’s consecutive wins under Zidane from 2016-2018. With a young average squad age, PSG appears set for future success.
Désiré Doué commented, “It’s crazy. We’ll enjoy this and then work hard because we want more. We are young and ambitious.” Meanwhile, Arsenal continues its quest for European success, having played 226 games without lifting the trophy.
Manager Mikel Arteta emphasized the need to learn from defeat and improve to compete on Europe’s high level. He praised PSG’s abilities, stating, “I congratulate PSG. They are the best team worldwide with what they can do with the ball.”
Arsenal’s Defense
Arsenal looked set to end their losing run after taking an early lead. With comfortable defense, they maintained pressure on PSG, who had difficulty finding breakthroughs. Despite having more possession, PSG appeared tense.
The pre-match show by The Killers was followed by a subdued first half from PSG. They managed only one shot on target. A penalty late in the game, after Cristhian Mosquera fouled Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, was converted by Dembélé, equalizing the score. Fans sighed in relief as PSG found their chance back.
PSG missed further opportunities, including Khvicha hitting the post and Bradley Barcola firing wide. Arsenal had minimal possession at 24.7%, yet pushed PSG to a penalty shootout. Missed attempts from both sides kept the tension high. Gabriel’s missed penalty concluded the match, spurring jubilant celebrations from PSG fans.
As Marquinhos raised the trophy, fireworks and confetti marked PSG’s achievement. French President Emmanuel Macron congratulated the team and lauded them for bringing pride to France.
