St. Charles North High School faces an intriguing situation with their quarterback lineup. Sophomore Dashel Von Qualen sees himself as a big-play threat, partnering with senior Landon Conroy. Both quarterbacks demonstrate their potential through early season games, bringing noteworthy results for the North Stars.
It’s great. We have a yin-and-yang thing going, keeping the hot hand. If someone isn’t making plays, we switch. We’re two great quarterbacks.
Von Qualen showcased his explosiveness in a 56-21 nonconference victory against South Elgin. His first three passes resulted in touchdowns, and he ran for an impressive 96 yards on six carries. Completing 4 of 4 passes for 153 yards and scoring a 35-yard run, Von Qualen demonstrated striking capabilities for St. Charles North (2-0).
Conroy also contributed, completing 4 of 6 passes for 120 yards and a touchdown. He added 45 yards and another touchdown on eight carries. Jameson Walters shined with a 94-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and snagged two 39-yard passes, one leading to a score. Tommy Vendl achieved a 1-yard touchdown run and a 71-yard touchdown reception. Freshman Jeremiah Torres made a mark for South Elgin (1-1) with an 89-yard kickoff return touchdown. Carter McDonald chipped in with a 1-yard touchdown run.
Conroy has patiently awaited his starting opportunity, showcasing a team-first mindset by working with Von Qualen early in the season.
It’s working out pretty well. We’re 2-0, putting up stats, and making the team better. Both of us contribute our part. It’s definitely fun. It offers a competitive advantage.
Embracing the shared role scenario, Conroy stated the importance of team player values at North.
We value selflessness; everyone goes through it.
Coach Rob Pomazak appreciates the quarterbacks’ unselfishness.
We’re lucky to have both Landon and Dash. They accepted their roles, avoiding any disagreement. The line-up offers fastball and change-up options.
The matchup against South Elgin saw Conroy start strong for the North Stars with a 57-yard pass and an 18-yard touchdown run. He connected with Jackson Weasler for a 10-yard score before Von Qualen took charge. Von Qualen threw three touchdown passes: 39 yards to Walters, 35 to Jack Leigl, and 71 to Vendl.
Von Qualen believes the duo offers difficulties for their opponents with diverse preparations.
We’re both starter caliber. Opponents face challenges preparing for two styles.
While both quarterbacks seek the starting position, the focus remains on the team’s success.
If two players want the role and are selfless, throwing ego aside, focusing on team improvement, it leads to winning.
Paul Johnson contributes to The Beacon-News.
