Blainey Dowling, the senior quarterback for St. Xavier, faced a challenging first football game in Chicago after four years with a heavy 42-point loss amid a rainy storm. Despite this, Dowling described the experience positively. “It was a blessing to be out there,” he expressed. This perspective may seem unusual. However, it’s understandable when considering Dowling’s football journey, marred by two elbow surgeries and doctors advising a medical retirement during his time at Eastern Illinois.
Initially, Dowling considered leaving football for good. “That was kind of my plan,” he shared. “But I decided to come here, and it’s been a blessing every day.” This includes a game where he threw for 175 yards and two touchdowns. Unfortunately, St. Xavier succumbed to a 59-17 defeat against Indiana Wesleyan, ranked sixth, in the Mid-States Football Association crossover game held at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field.
Freshman wide receiver Coen Demack made significant contributions with five receptions for 81 yards, featuring a 56-yard touchdown pass. This helped St. Xavier (0-3) secure a 17-7 lead. The defensive effort by senior Owen Schickel, also from Mount Carmel, was notable. He recorded 14 tackles, including 10 solo, and forced two fumbles.
On the opposing side, Indiana Wesleyan (4-0) showcased an impressive performance. Arjun Lothe threw for 278 yards and three touchdowns, while Ryan Whitwell of Batavia rushed 27 times for 243 yards and two touchdowns. Despite Blake Brumbaugh’s three receptions, they resulted in 170 yards and three touchdowns.
Playing in front of family and friends, Dowling hadn’t performed in Chicago since 2022. At that time, he was instrumental in leading Mount Carmel to four consecutive state championships, earning the title of Daily Southtown’s player of the year. Dowling conveyed gratitude, “I give thanks to the Lord for getting me out here and letting me play another down. It’s been forever since I’ve played here. My little siblings were excited to see me play.”
Dowling made a significant impact in the NAIA, throwing for 449 yards and four touchdowns on September 5 during a 38-31 loss to Taylor in Upland, Indiana. His efforts earned him the MSFA Midwest League Offensive Player of the Week honor. St. Xavier coach Mike Feminis praised Dowling, “He’s already done some great things for us. He can make plays.” Feminis acknowledged Dowling’s ability, especially after a four-year absence from playing football. He maintains high expectations for Dowling’s growth. “I told him, ‘You can’t be expected to be the guy who won the state championship,’” Feminis remarked.
Demack, a Bishop McNamara graduate, is rapidly becoming a favored receiver with 27 catches for 352 yards and four touchdowns. He appreciates Dowling’s attitude and drive to win, despite the recent losses. St. Xavier has faced formidable teams, taking on nationally ranked opponents early in the season.
Dowling aims to shift the team’s record positively and emphasized the need for progress. He is also pursuing a communications degree, aspiring to open a training facility in the future. “I would love to give back to the younger kids and try to teach them everything I know,” he stated, adding a message of resilience. “You can always claw back and fight back and deal with adversity. No matter what your circumstances are, you can find a way.”
