Stanford Graduates Walk Out in Protest During Sundar Pichai’s Speech

Stanford University’s commencement ceremony witnessed a significant protest on Sunday. Around 200 students walked out as Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai began his speech. Local reports indicated that some students held Palestinian flags during the protest.

The protest was likely in response to Google’s involvement in “Project Nimbus,” a $1.2 billion cloud contract with Amazon involving the Israeli government. Announced in 2021, this deal has been controversial among anti-Israel activists.

It’s easy to look at the news of the day and think that we’re living in uniquely challenging times.” Pichai emphasized each generation’s unique challenges and the importance of framing circumstances positively.

This protest marks another instance of anti-Israel sentiment at Stanford’s commencements. Last year, students protested speaker Katie Ledecky, accusing the university of “complicity” in Israel’s actions against Gaza. In 2024, students also protested the then-university president Richard Saller and held an alternative “People’s Commencement” to express support for Palestine.

Stanford has faced criticism for its response to these protests. In 2024, demonstrators occupied and vandalized the offices of the university president and provost. The controversy has highlighted the ongoing tensions surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict on college campuses.
