In the first week of the NFL regular season, Stefon Diggs made headlines with a touchdown celebration that negatively impacted his team. Known for his exceptional route-running skills, Diggs showcased his talent with a 10-yard touchdown against the Philadelphia Eagles. He managed to outmaneuver Eagles cornerback Cooper DeJean, leaving himself open to score.
However, after the impressive play, Diggs celebrated by imitating an outdated move from Antonio Brown, jumping on the goal post. The NFL prohibits using the goal post as a prop, leading to an immediate penalty.
Reflecting on the incident in a post-game interview, Diggs acknowledged his mistake. “As soon as I wrapped my arms around it, I remembered: ‘Oh, I forgot,'” Diggs remarked, citing that he used to perform similar celebrations earlier in his career. Yet, using the goal post for celebrations has been illegal since 2006, well before Diggs joined the league in 2015.
The penalty due to his celebration affected the game’s outcome. The Washington Commanders, trailing 17-9 with ten minutes left, saw the touchdown narrow the gap to 17-15. Coach Dan Quinn initially planned a two-point conversion to tie the game. However, Diggs’ 15-yard penalty forced the team to attempt an extra point instead, making the score 17-16. Ultimately, the Commanders lost 24-22.
Quarterback Jayden Daniels expressed his frustration about the incident. “You’ve just got to be smarter,” Daniels said post-game. “There is a time and place for everything and celebrations.” Daniels also admitted he should have reminded teammates to avoid penalties during critical moments.
Coach Quinn discussed the incident with Diggs, emphasizing that Diggs should have known better. “He knows better in that space,” Quinn stated. “But I love his fight and what he stands for as a competitor.” Yet, this costly mistake may have contributed to their defeat.
