Meanwhile, Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout began the 2026 MLB All-Star Game by striking out during his first turn at-bat. The game takes place close to Trout’s origins, as Citizens Bank Park is located about 40 miles from his New Jersey birthplace. Despite Trout’s personal achievements, the Angels struggle in the AL West standings.

The Angels have not seen postseason action since 2014. This marks the longest current playoff drought in MLB, with the Pittsburgh Pirates close behind, having last appeared in the playoffs in 2015. At 38-59 before the break, the Angels face tough odds of turning their season around, though Trout remains motivated by the skepticism they face.

Despite a successful career since debuting with the Angels in 2011, Trout has only participated in one postseason series. This lack of team success has sparked speculation about his future with the team.

Yet, ahead of Tuesday’s All-Star Game, Trout stated his commitment to the Angels, emphasizing unfinished goals in Southern California.

Could I take the easy way out and just leave? Yeah, Trout said. But, for me, right now, my focus is on trying to get this club back in the playoffs.

To turn playoff hopes into reality, the Angels need to narrow a 10-game gap in the wild-card race or close an 11.5-game distance behind the AL West-leading Texas Rangers.

Trout committed long-term to the Angels with a landmark contract extension in 2019, lasting through 2030 and featuring a full no-trade clause. Although injuries have interrupted Trout’s standout career, he entered the All-Star break having participated in 78 of Los Angeles’ 97 games, adding 18 home runs.
