Bab el-Mandeb, a modest fishing village in Yemen, offers a striking contrast. Its simple huts lie between the sea and a mountain range. Despite its humble appearance, the village oversees one of the world’s most crucial waterways. This area shares its name with the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a vital link between the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea. This strait has become a focal point in the ongoing U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran.
Saleh, a 58-year-old local, expressed his dismay about the area’s underdevelopment. He noted the high volume of ships passing by while lamenting the lack of economic growth. “We should be wealthy,” Saleh said, gesturing at the poorly maintained boats scattered on the beach. “Instead, we have nothing.”
In January, a power struggle between Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, key allies of Yemen’s government, affected Bab el-Mandeb. The UAE relinquished control of the area and the adjacent Perim Island to Saudi Arabia. However, control shifted again when Iranian-backed Houthi rebels seized the Yemeni Red Sea coast, including the strait.
The Houthis now hold a strategic position in the “Gate of Tears,” a narrow stretch of the Red Sea. This location is crucial as it affects the passage of about 7% of global energy supplies and 12% to 15% of all global shipping. They have taken over Perim Island, strategically situated at the narrowest point of the Red Sea, only 12.5 miles wide. One Houthi commander highlighted their ability to target ships using basic artillery from Perim’s coast.
Any disruption in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait would have a broader impact. For instance, ships must navigate this strait to access the Suez Canal, which serves as a crucial economic corridor. A shipping disaster in 2021 demonstrated how critical this route is when a container ship blocked the Suez, delaying billions worth of goods for six days.
Recent tensions between the Houthis and Israel in 2023 increased global concerns. The Houthis closed the strait to pressure Israel over its actions in Gaza. This led to U.S. military involvement before a ceasefire was agreed upon.
Current geopolitical events enhance the strait’s significance. The U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran led to Tehran closing the Strait of Hormuz, affecting global energy distribution. Persian Gulf nations, notably Saudi Arabia, diverted exports through Bab el-Mandeb to counteract this blockade.
The Houthis have a longstanding conflict with Saudi Arabia. Hostilities date back to the Houthis capturing Sanaa in 2014, prompting a Saudi-led retaliatory campaign, which continued until a 2022 ceasefire. However, tensions resumed after Saudi forces allegedly targeted Sanaa’s airport, leading to renewed Houthi attacks on Saudi oil facilities.
Saudi Arabia sought U.S. assistance in facing the Houthi advance but found limited support from President Trump. Nonetheless, U.S. officials reaffirmed commitments to defense agreements with Saudi Arabia.
The Houthis state that their blockade aims solely at Saudi Arabia, not at disrupting Red Sea shipping. They remain cautious to avoid prompting international military intervention. However, Yemeni government officials doubt the Houthis’ intentions. Vice President Abdullah Abdulkader al Alimi-Bawzer stated at the United Nations that the Houthis’ actions risk global economic stability.
Amidst these developments, the Houthis strengthened their hold on strategic coastal areas. They benefit from existing infrastructure like paved highways and airbases developed with Emirati investments. On Perim Island, valuable construction work was carried out, including a runway suitable for attack and surveillance aircraft.
Yemeni government forces have managed to halt further Houthi advances. However, the situation remains complex with the Houthis advancing in drone and missile capabilities. The fragmented Yemeni forces face significant challenges in reclaiming control.
