Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) President Stacy Davis Gates has expressed clear support for Mayor Brandon Johnson’s re-election. In a recent interview, she stated her readiness to gather petition signatures for his campaign.
“I hope to see Mayor Johnson come off the sideline and I hope to see the people who support him get out here and pass a petition. If he’s not going to pass one, I’ll pass one for him,”

She praised Johnson for funding schools generously, claiming CPS has not seen better leadership. Despite criticisms of Johnson’s close relationship with the CTU, she argues his contributions include a $1 billion investment.
Union’s Political Influence
In 2023, the CTU endorsed Johnson, a former public school teacher, who defeated incumbent Mayor Lori Lightfoot in the primary and CPS CEO Paul Vallas in the runoff.
The Connecticut Union committed over $2.6 million into Johnson’s campaign, while teacher unions collectively invested more than $6 million.
