Recent research has identified two conditions that significantly elevate the risk of mortality among older adults: abdominal obesity and low vitamin D levels. When these conditions occur together, the risk increases substantially. The study, which involved over 5,500 participants aged 50 and above, demonstrates these findings.
Published in Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, the study shows that individuals over 50, suffering from both conditions, are 123% more likely to die within the study period compared to those without these conditions. The individual effects of vitamin D deficiency and abdominal obesity were also examined. Vitamin D deficiency, marked by blood levels below 30 nanomoles per liter, raised the risk of death by 91%. Abdominal obesity, defined as a waist circumference over 40 inches for men and 35 inches for women, increased the risk by 47%. However, their co-occurrence drastically multiplies the health risks.

The study uncovers a biological link between abdominal obesity and vitamin D deficiency. It explains how excess body fat can reduce the levels of enzymes needed for vitamin D processing, thereby decreasing its availability in the body. The resulting vitamin D deficiency exacerbates the issue by weakening the immune system, which worsens the inflammation caused by abdominal fat.
This phenomenon, termed ‘inflammaging’, refers to the persistent inflammation associated with older age. When combined with the inflammation from abdominal fat and low vitamin D levels, it significantly compounds health risks.

According to Alexandre, abdominal obesity is a known risk factor due to its association with inflammation and metabolic issues. He suggests two practical steps for people over 50: monitoring vitamin D levels and addressing excess abdominal fat. These measures could prevent premature death.
