Superintendent Alberto Carvalho Resigns Amid F.B.I. Investigation

The superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District, Alberto Carvalho, resigned on Sunday. His resignation comes months after the F.B.I. conducted a raid on his home and office in February, as part of a criminal investigation related to the district’s interactions with an A.I. start-up.

Carvalho, recognized as a notable figure in education, was hired in 2021 to oversee the nation’s second-largest school district. His appointment followed a successful tenure in Miami, where he gained acclaim for improving student test scores. However, his time in Los Angeles was marked by controversy.

Since February 27, Carvalho had been on paid leave at the suggestion of the board of education, aiming to ease the tensions surrounding the investigation.

The news of his resignation was first reported by The Los Angeles Times. The announcement, with immediate effect, was made through a letter to the district and the school board members.

As of now, Andres Chait, a seasoned administrator with Los Angeles Unified, has been serving as acting superintendent since Carvalho stepped back from his duties.

The search for a permanent replacement has not been clarified.

Carvalho’s legal team released a statement in March, asserting their client’s innocence. They emphasized that no evidence had yet been presented by prosecutors to support any claim of Carvalho violating federal law. Despite his resignation, Carvalho did not provide any comment on Sunday.
