Supreme Court Denies Trump’s Appeal in E. Jean Carroll Case

The Supreme Court refused to consider former President Donald Trump’s appeal to overturn a $5 million verdict. The verdict found Trump liable for sexually abusing writer E. Jean Carroll at a New York department store in the 1990s and later defaming her. Trump’s lawyers requested the justices revisit their decision to decline his appeal. The court rejected his petition along with others.

This decision follows Trump’s payment of the judgment after the court ignored his earlier appeal in June. In a separate case, Trump and the Justice Department have requested the court nullify another Carroll verdict of $83 million. They claim presidential immunity for Trump’s 2019 comments about Carroll. The court has yet to decide on that appeal.

Carroll, known for her work as an advice columnist and TV host, testified in 2023 that what began as a friendly encounter in the 1990s turned into an assault in a Bergdorf Goodman dressing room. The jury determined Trump’s denials in 2022 defamed her. Trump maintains he did nothing wrong.

In reporting cases of sexual assault, the Associated Press generally avoids naming accusers unless they have made their allegations publicly, which Carroll has done.
