Justice Amy Coney Barrett spoke at the Reagan Library in Simi Valley, California, where she also signed copies of her latest book, Listening to the Law: Reflections on the Court and Constitution. While the Supreme Court delivered several impactful legal decisions last week, the justices also quietly released their annual financial reports.
Justice Samuel Alito was the only justice to request an extension for his financial disclosure, which he has done for the past 15 years. Although these reports do not provide a full account of the justices’ wealth, they offer insights into their earnings from book deals, teaching, and other activities.
Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson Tops Income List
Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson earned the most last year, with over $1.1 million from her memoir, Lovely One, published in 2024. This brought her total earnings from the book to approximately $4 million. Other justices also reported income from published works. Justice Amy Coney Barrett earned $849,000, Neil Gorsuch received $300,000, and Sonia Sotomayor earned $88,000 from various publications, including an autobiography and children’s books.
While Justice Clarence Thomas earned $1.5 million from his 2007 memoir, he reported no publisher payments last year. Justice Brett Kavanaugh, one of 13 co-authors of a 2016 legal treatise, also did not report payments last year. He is reportedly working on a memoir, but no earnings were listed. Alito is set to release a book in the fall, but his income for it remains undisclosed as his financial report is pending.
Teaching and Other Sources of Income
Many justices earn additional income from teaching at law schools. Chief Justice John Roberts taught at New England Law, and Neil Gorsuch taught at George Mason University. Clarence Thomas taught classes at Catholic University, while Amy Coney Barrett and Brett Kavanaugh taught at Notre Dame Law School. Barrett has a long association with Notre Dame, having graduated from and taught there for over two decades.
Gifts and Travel Reimbursements
Among the justices, only Ketanji Brown Jackson and Sonia Sotomayor reported receiving gifts in 2025. Jackson received a $2,500 painting, and Sotomayor reported a trip to Kansas City for a musical based on her children’s book, Just Ask. She also accepted concert tickets worth $4,333 during a private trip to Puerto Rico coinciding with Bad Bunny’s concert series.
Clarence Thomas had his travel expenses covered by the Hoover Institution for attending a celebration of Thomas Sowell. Sotomayor, Gorsuch, Barrett, and Jackson reported reimbursements for international travel related to speeches and teaching. Chief Justice Roberts did not report any gifts or travel reimbursements.
Other Activities and Investments
Outside of the courtroom, Justice Kavanaugh coached girls’ basketball teams in Washington, D.C. Despite their significant salaries, the justices could earn more income if they joined large law firms. The chief justice, for example, earns $320,700 per year, while associate justices earn $306,600 annually.
John Roberts was the only justice to report investing in individual stocks. Although Samuel Alito previously owned individual stocks, his financial report is not yet available due to the extension. Most justices opt for index funds and mutual funds to avoid conflicts of interest.
The financial disclosure forms are quite vague, with broad reporting ranges for investment earnings. As a result, it is difficult to gauge the justices’ overall wealth. Additionally, the forms do not report on their homes’ current values or their spouses’ income, which is significant in cases like Chief Justice Roberts.
