Survival in flood situations hinges on several factors, including the availability of oxygen, food, and water. Recent catastrophic flooding along the Nepal-China border has resulted in hundreds of deaths and thousands still unaccounted for. On Monday, Nepalese rescuers accelerated their efforts to free workers trapped in hydropower site tunnels buried by mud.
Experts emphasize the urgency of the first 72 hours, as survival chances decrease without clean water. Jennifer Horney, a disaster epidemiologist at the University of Delaware, indicates that the existence of emergency protocols in the tunnels could have trained workers on emergency exits. However, flooding forces might have obstructed these exits with mud, complicating rescues.
For those trapped, clean drinking water access is critical, yet it remains uncertain whether emergency supplies were pre-stocked. Horney stated that beyond three days, survival without safe water is unlikely. Aerial images show buildings covered in mud near the Trishuli River in Nepal, highlighting the devastation.
Breathable air access is crucial as well. Jakob Steiner, a geoscientist from the University of Graz, noted some workers have oxygen, but suffocation remains a concern six days post-flooding. The rescue teams are attempting to provide oxygen and organize rescue operations. The situation is urgent, with workers needing essential supplies swiftly.
Mental health effects due to isolation are significant, as are concerns about serious injuries and the methods for delivering necessities during rescues, stated Thomas Chandler from Columbia University. He referenced a similar Himalayan tunnel incident in 2023, where workers were sustained with food, water, and oxygen via pipes.
The climate within the tunnels may affect dehydration rates, particularly if they’re hot and humid. Rescued individuals may require supportive care for both physical and mental well-being, as disaster specialists suggest.
In related news, various Associated Press journalists contributed insights on similar incidents and their coverage of the situation. The role of the press in reporting these events underscores the importance of supporting reliable journalism and constructive dialogue.
