Harrowing Experience in the Himalayan Flood
A couple from the San Francisco Bay Area narrowly escaped a devastating flood while on a pilgrimage to Tibet. Anjana Raja and her partner, Pattabiraman Venkatesan, encountered a life-threatening situation on Wednesday when a glacier collapse in the Himalayas triggered severe flash flooding along the Nepal-Tibet border. ‘I knew I was going to die,’ Raja recounted, describing their terrifying ordeal.
Tragedy Unfolds in Nepal and Tibet
The flood has resulted in nearly 600 fatalities, with about 2,500 individuals still missing. Authorities are conducting a frantic search for survivors, including 90 Americans, as confirmed by the U.S. State Department. The initial impact was felt in the Nepali village of Timure, where Raja and Venkatesan were with their tour group.
A Narrow Escape
As the flood approached, the couple was traveling by bus in Nepal’s Rasuwa District. Venkatesan described witnessing an enormous wave that resembled a dark tsunami. ‘It’s like 60, 70 feet, but dark black,’ he said. With quick thinking, Raja pulled Venkatesan, and they sprinted to safety as the floodwaters surged through the area.
Struggle for Survival
Thousands fled for their lives, some caught on camera as they were swept away, while others climbed to higher ground for safety. Raja recounted hearing screams as floodwaters destroyed homes. Guided by local knowledge, the couple managed to reach a flat area atop a mountain. The climb was perilous, with Raja describing it as a tall and difficult ascent.
Search and Rescue
After spending the night in a goat shed with other survivors, they were airlifted to safety the next day. Remarkably, everyone on their tour bus survived. ‘The fact that we survived is nothing short of a miracle,’ Venkatesan stated, reflecting on the ordeal.
A Renewed Perspective on Life
The experience left the couple counting their blessings and reassessing their outlook on life. ‘Be good, do good, think good, and leave the rest to whoever is above us,’ Venkatesan shared, highlighting the profound impact of their harrowing experience.
The couple’s story serves as a stark reminder of both the unpredictability of nature and the resilience of the human spirit.
