In an unexpected turn of events, a suspect allegedly took over a Dallas police cruiser during a routine traffic stop, resulting in a dramatic series of actions. Newly released body camera and dash camera footage provide a detailed view of the incident’s progression.
Initial Arrest
The situation unfolded at approximately 5:35 p.m. on May 30. Two officers executed a traffic stop in the 2300 block of South Marsalis Avenue. Stacey Huffman, aged 37, was apprehended and placed in the back of a patrol car while handcuffed.
According to video evidence captured inside the vehicle, Huffman managed to slip his left hand out of the restraints but continued to keep his hands behind his back. As officers commenced transporting him to jail, Huffman reportedly attempted to unlock the rear door and removed his seatbelt.
Attempted Restraint and Escape
Officers pulled over on Interstate 35 around 6:10 p.m. to secure Huffman further. The situation escalated when both officers exited the vehicle. Huffman allegedly moved to the driver’s seat and accelerated with one officer already re-entered the back seat.
The officer attempted to use a Taser, but Huffman disconnected its wires. Despite the officer’s repeated commands to halt, Huffman allegedly sped up.
Reclaiming Control
During the high-speed getaway, police say the officer drew his weapon and struck Huffman on the head as the car swerved violently. While traveling at about 50 mph, Huffman opened the driver’s-side door and exited the moving vehicle.
The patrol car, traveling nearly 1,000 feet, was in Huffman’s control for around 30 seconds. After Huffman vacated the car, the officer quickly took control of the vehicle, preventing a crash.
Aftermath and Charges
Authorities detained Huffman, who was found unconscious after jumping from the vehicle. Both he and the officer received treatment at a local hospital.
Huffman faces a series of charges, including driving with an invalid license, unlawful firearm possession, unauthorized use of a vehicle, and escape from custody. The incident remains under investigation.
