Sylvester Stallone recently discussed his challenging upbringing, marked by abandonment and violence, in an interview with The New York Times. He shared that he left out many of the darkest stories from his book to avoid eliciting pity.
I didn’t put a lot of stuff in the book because I didn’t want a pity party… but it was insane,he admitted.
Stallone, known for his roles in films like Rocky and Rambo, reflected on his experiences growing up after his parents’ divorce. He lived with his father in Maryland, who he described as volatile and physically abusive.
Childhood Memories
One incident that Stallone recalls vividly involved his father sending him to buy bread before church. After returning with nut bread instead, his father kicked and hit him, leaving him in the street while he drove away.
Really, it’s unbelievable. It’s unbelievable,Stallone recounted.
Later in life, when Stallone was in his 40s, he confronted his father. He expressed a desire for both of them to be the same age for a few minutes so they could experience each other’s perspectives. The confrontation led to a near-altercation, even though his father was 68 at the time.
The Influence on His Work
The action star linked his father’s fierceness to the intensity he brought to roles like Rambo. He mentioned that the perceived ferocity in his performances comes from his genetic makeup.
In addition to his father’s lack of affection, Stallone noted his mother never hugged him or showed warmth. An isolated memory of his father placing Stallone’s head on his knee after a long day stayed with him.
And I never got over that,he admitted.
Stallone’s early years included spending time at a boarding house, where his parents visited infrequently. This setup, he explains, became a natural environment for him due to a lack of nurturing at home.
Impact on Personal Life
The absence of familial warmth influenced Stallone’s toughness, which he acknowledges developed in a flawed way. He shared that true love came to him much later in life, around the age of 70, with his wife and children.
And that’s a big pity. It really is,Stallone lamented.
Stallone has built an illustrious career in Hollywood despite his tumultuous childhood. He is known for creating and starring in the Rocky series, which garnered 10 Oscar nominations and won three Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
Off-screen, Stallone has been married three times and has five children. He married his first wife, Sasha Czack, in 1974, and they had two sons. Later, he married his Rocky IV co-star, Brigitte Nielsen, before eventually finding stability with his current wife, Jennifer Flavin, with whom he shares three daughters.
