In a recent statement, Taiwan’s President, Lai Ching-te, highlighted the importance of arms purchases from the United States in ensuring regional peace and stability. His comments followed remarks from former U.S. President Donald Trump that cast doubt on continued support for Taiwan after his visit to China.
According to President Lai, U.S. arms sales and security cooperation with Taiwan not only adhere to legal obligations but also act as crucial stabilizers in the region. He expressed gratitude for Trump’s support during his first term, noting the increase in the scale and quantity of arms sales to Taiwan.
Trump recently expressed uncertainty over approving a new $14 billion arms package to Taiwan. He mentioned that this decision “depends on China,” suggesting it serves as a significant negotiation tool. This statement has caused concern in Taiwan.
Despite these concerns, the Taiwanese government emphasized that U.S. policy regarding Taiwan remains unchanged. President Lai assured that Taiwan does not seek to escalate tensions but stands firm in protecting its sovereignty and democratic principles, identifying China as a source of regional instability.
“Taiwan will not provoke or escalate conflict, but it will also not relinquish its national sovereignty and dignity,” Lai stated.
U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson supported Lai’s remarks, affirming a commitment to Taiwan’s sovereignty. In contrast, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer highlighted that any decision regarding arms sales will prioritize American security needs.
China regards Taiwan as a core issue in U.S.-China relations. Recently, Chinese President Xi Jinping warned of potential conflicts if the Taiwan issue isn’t handled correctly. This tension dates back to 1949, when China’s civil war resulted in divided governance between China and Taiwan.
