Sen. Bill Cassidy’s Career Ends with Primary Loss
Senator Bill Cassidy’s political career ended with his loss in the Republican primary in Louisiana. Tensions with former President Donald Trump played a significant role in this outcome. Congressman Julia Letlow, endorsed by Trump, and State Treasurer John Fleming will proceed to a runoff on June 27. The winner will likely win the fall election in the strongly Republican state of Louisiana.
This loss adds to Trump’s successes in displacing Republicans seen as disloyal to him. Cassidy, a physician who transitioned into politics, occasionally disagreed with his party on issues like healthcare. His critical deviation from party lines occurred in 2021 when he voted to convict Trump on impeachment charges for inciting the January 6 insurrection. This vote followed his recent re-election, defeating Democratic Senator Mary Landrieu in a red wave in 2014. He served in the U.S. Senate after six years in the House and two years in the Louisiana State Senate.
Despite Cassidy’s voting record strongly supporting Trump’s initiatives, his impeachment vote overshadowed his alignment. Trump has successfully campaigned against Republicans who supported impeachment, leaving only a few still in office.
Cassidy championed Trump’s legislative agenda, rarely voting against it. The National Republican Senatorial Committee even highlighted his backing for Trump’s tax cuts. However, tensions remained, especially with the “Make America Healthy Again” initiative which focused on elements of Trump’s agenda.
Notably, conflict arose between Cassidy, known for supporting vaccines, and vaccine skeptic Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Despite his reservations, Cassidy voted to confirm Kennedy. This pattern of expressing concerns but ultimately voting with his party persisted throughout his tenure.
Cassidy was vocal in healthcare debates, famously appearing on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” in 2017, endorsing the protection of healthcare for children with pre-existing conditions. Yet, he supported a GOP effort that threatened these protections, an effort that narrowly failed.
In 2023, after Homeland Security agents shot two individuals in Minnesota, Cassidy voiced concern but supported his party’s stance amid calls for policy changes. Trump’s backing for Letlow, marked by his call to her on social media, “RUN, JULIA, RUN!!!” led to her swift campaign launch and continued success, leaving Cassidy out of the race.
