Tarps Cover Kennedy Center Amid Controversy Over Trump Name Removal
The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts became the focus of global news recently. Workers hung large tarps across its facade to conceal changes made under a court order. These changes involved the removal of President Trump’s name from the building’s marble front.
Questions persist. The center’s operations chief, Matt Floca, confirmed in court that the name was removed. A New York Times photographer captured images suggesting progress. Yet, as of a week later, the tarps continue to obscure the building’s facade. There is no visual confirmation that the facade now reads ‘The John F. Kennedy Center Memorial Center for the Performing Arts.’
The tarps are tightly secured, making it impossible to see the building’s front. Luna Woo, a violinist from Portland, Oregon, tried to glimpse behind them during a National Symphony Orchestra program. Her efforts, like others’, were unsuccessful.
Asked when the tarps would be removed, Kennedy Center spokeswoman Roma Daravi responded via email. She stated, ‘The scaffolding and tarp will remain up as crews address maintenance needs of the marble and soffit panels.’
Diverging opinions emerge. Supporters of the former president see the incident as trivial. Critics, however, view the tarps as a metaphor for Trump’s sensitive ego.
