Every technological advance brings a wave of fear, and artificial intelligence is no exception. This phenomenon is longstanding. An example can be found in an 1862 analysis by The Lancet, titled, “The Influence of Railway Travelling on Public Health.”
With the advent of railroads, not only did railway accidents occur but other concerns arose as well. Media of the time reported such accidents graphically; however, experts also voiced worries unrelated to accidents.
As trains increased in speed, some predicted passengers might suffocate. Others suggested that viewing fast-moving scenery might impair visual processing. Additional experts speculated the human body might not handle these speeds.
These historical fears reflect similar apprehensions about emerging technologies today, such as artificial intelligence, emphasizing recurring concerns in the face of progress.
