Teen Arrested in Connection to Penn State Student’s Murder; Second Suspect Sought

U.S. Marshals have arrested a 16-year-old suspect in Colorado in connection with the murder of Billy Schmidt, a Penn State student. Philadelphia police confirmed that the arrested teen, along with another 16-year-old, will face adult charges related to the robbery and shooting that occurred on June 6.

Kaiseem Smith, identified as the second suspect, is currently a fugitive. Authorities have issued a wanted poster to aid in his capture. A man is connected to a recent theft of an off-duty police officer’s car in Philadelphia and is also considered a person of interest in Schmidt’s murder.

Billy Schmidt, aged 22, died during an attempted armed robbery around 1:30 a.m. on June 6. He suffered a gunshot wound to his chest, was transported to a hospital, and was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

Khadfi Fleming, aged 19, is alleged to be involved in the car theft and is a person of interest in Schmidt’s murder. According to officials, police observed a red Lexus, without headlights, near 70th Street and Lindbergh Boulevard, followed by a dark SUV. After two males approached the Lexus, shots were fired.

The suspects reportedly stole a green Dodge Charger, belonging to an off-duty police officer, who pursued and confronted them, hearing gunfire shortly afterwards. Fleming is still under investigation as a suspect in Schmidt’s death.

Surveillance footage reportedly shows Schmidt requesting his phone as he chased the suspects. A phone appears to be thrown to the ground, followed by a gunshot.

Police released footage of the two suspects involved in Schmidt’s murder. Khadfi Fleming’s 16-year-old brother was apprehended in Colorado, along with another teenager who voluntarily surrendered to police.

Billy Schmidt was studying journalism at Penn State World Campus and was expected to graduate in December.
