The United States Coast Guard (USCG) reported a tragic incident on Tuesday involving a boat with three individuals. Only a 15-year-old has been rescued alive after going missing earlier this week.
Rescue teams located the teenager on Monday, clinging to the capsized vessel off the coast of Alaska. The teen was in the middle of a medical emergency when found.
Hypothermia Concerns
Officials noted that the teenager was experiencing symptoms of hypothermia when they were rescued from the overturned skiff.
Other Mariners Found Deceased
The other two mariners on the 18-foot fishing vessel were found dead. The boat had overturned approximately 4 miles east of St. Lawrence Island.
The Coast Guard launched a search mission early Monday after being informed by Alaska State Troopers on Sunday evening that a boat was overdue. Tragically, the rescue was delayed until Monday morning due to unfavorable weather and limited visibility.
A good Samaritan vessel contributed significantly by rescuing the teen and assisting in recovering the deceased mariners.
Both the survivor and the bodies of the deceased were eventually taken to Nome, Alaska, for further handling, according to officials.
