The Tennessee Titans made a surprising decision by selecting Carnell Tate as the first wide receiver in the 2026 NFL Draft on April 23. Despite expectations that Tate might join a team as a No. 2 receiver, the Titans picked him at No. 4 overall, raising eyebrows among analysts.
Tate’s role at Ohio State never required him to be the top receiver. Many believed he would fit well with the Washington Commanders, picked at No. 7, to work alongside Terry McLaurin and assist their quarterback, Jayden Daniels. Also, some experts suggested potential matches with the New York Giants or Kansas City Chiefs. At these teams, Tate could serve as a complementary piece, supporting quarterbacks like Jaxson Dart and Patrick Mahomes respectively.
The Titans’ decision to draft Tate has shifted the narrative. Their choice reflects a commitment to building around their 2025 first overall pick, quarterback Cam Ward. Tennesee sees Tate as more than capable of becoming a primary offensive weapon. Ward is optimistic, quoted by ESPN’s Turron Davenport, “He’ll have an explosive year just because he’ll get a lot of one-on-one matchups.”
Ward further praised the offense’s design, highlighting the coaching team led by head coach Robert Saleh and offensive coordinator Brian Daboll. Saleh, known for his defensive expertise, took the helm in January. Daboll, despite an unimpressive head coaching stint with the Giants, has a track record of developing elite talent, like Josh Allen during his time with the Buffalo Bills.
The Titans envision Tate as a catalyst similar to Stefon Diggs for the Bills. Daboll’s arrival aims to nurture Ward’s potential while offering guidance without stifling Tate’s style. The strategic pairing of Ward and Tate is designed to drive the Titans’ offensive success.
