On Tuesday, as global leaders of the Group of 7 met to discuss multiple issues, including Russia’s ongoing conflict with Ukraine, tensions escalated with a new development in the war. President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine announced that Ukrainian drones had targeted an oil refinery located in Moscow. This refinery is situated approximately 10 miles away from the Kremlin, marking a significant incursion into Russian territory.
Moscow’s mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, confirmed the attack, stating that it involved dozens of drones. While he reported that the Moscow Oil Refinery was struck, Sobyanin assured that no casualties occurred, although he did not elaborate on the extent of the damage caused.
Just a day prior, Russia had launched missile and drone attacks against Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities. These aggressive actions resulted in the deaths of at least 11 individuals and left many others injured. Among the targets was the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, an esteemed cathedral significant to the Eastern Orthodox church, which suffered damage during the strikes.
“This is a just response to Russian strikes and prolonging the war by the Kremlin,” Mr. Zelensky said in a video statement referring to the drone attack on Moscow.
The Moscow Oil Refinery, located in the Kapotnya district, plays a crucial role in the region’s energy supply. It provides more than a third of Moscow’s fuel needs including jet fuel and various other petroleum products, as noted by industry sources.
In an effort to push for peace negotiations, Mr. Zelensky has been advocating for direct discussions with Russian President Vladimir V. Putin to bring the war to an end. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian military is intensifying efforts to impact Russia’s oil and gas sectors in hopes of increasing the pressures felt by the Kremlin.
“Russia must be forced to end its war against our people,” stated Mr. Zelensky on Tuesday.
