Controversy around Piker intensified after viewers of his livestreams noticed a framed newspaper front page from September 12, 2001. This edition of The New York Times covered the attacks on the Twin Towers and the Pentagon. This addition to Piker’s background has sparked further scrutiny.

Piker previously faced backlash for comments made in 2019 regarding 9/11, which he later described as a critique of U.S. foreign policy rather than a literal statement. In response, he acknowledged the remarks were inappropriate and clarified his stance during interviews.

“I should have used more precise language,” Piker admitted in interviews.

Despite the controversy, Piker’s influence extends beyond his Twitch presence. At the recent CDA convention in Washington, D.C., his appearance attracted significant attention. Alongside other prominent figures, Piker’s participation drew criticism but also discussion among attendees.

During the convention, he wore an outfit compared to Mao Zedong’s style, attracting further mockery. His speech denounced Democrats who cooperate with political adversaries and support institutions like ICE and foreign interests. This bold approach stirred debate within the convention.

J Street U, a sponsor of the event, received backlash due to its affiliation with Piker. While they disagreed with some of his views, the organization emphasized the importance of participating in such venues to present their pro-Israel stance.

DSA Watch and the CDA Jewish Caucus criticized Piker’s speech. The latter called his inclusion in the convention a threat to Jewish safety, associating his rhetoric with antisemitism. The Anti-Defamation League echoed these sentiments, expressing concern over Piker’s presence at political events.

Debates continue within the Democratic Party about Piker’s place, especially considering his appeal to younger voters. His association with figures like Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed has fueled debate over whether his rhetoric aligns with Democratic values.
