Tesla stands as a top designer and manufacturer of electric cars and trucks worldwide. Owned by tech entrepreneur Elon Musk, the company operates from Austin, Texas. It is a multinational firm that also produces battery energy storage systems for homes, solar panels, and other clean energy products.
Tesla remains the most valued auto manufacturer globally, with a market capitalization approaching $1 trillion. The company leads in electric vehicle sales, holding over 20% of the global market share. In the plug-in hybrid sector, Tesla commands 14% of the market. The company develops several products, including its own photovoltaic systems for energy storage, making Tesla a key player in this technology sector.
Tesla’s success has significantly contributed to Elon Musk’s wealth, placing him among the richest people globally. The company, named after inventor Nikola Tesla, was established in 2003 by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tappening. Initially called Tesla Motors, Elon Musk became the largest shareholder in 2004 after investing $6.5 million, having amassed his fortune from PayPal.
Tesla’s core mission is to offer a safe, sustainable alternative to fossil fuels through electric vehicles. The company launched its first model, the Roadster sports car, in 2009. This was followed by the Model S sedan in 2012 and the Model X SUV in 2015. The release of the Model 3 sedan in 2017 marked a milestone as it became the bestselling electric car worldwide, with sales surpassing 1 million units, thereby cementing Tesla’s status as a leading sustainable energy firm.
In 2021, Tesla’s global sales surged by more than 87% compared to the previous year. Both Musk and Tesla benefit from government subsidies and contracts, which support various parts of their business.
