Texas Congressional Race: Controversy Over Ads Targeting Veteran’s Disability

The Texas congressional race in the 35th District has become increasingly contentious. John Lujan and Carlos De La Cruz are embroiled in new controversy as veterans criticize political ads mocking De La Cruz’s military disability. These ads were distributed by the Protect and Serve PAC supporting Lujan.

These ads attack De La Cruz, an Air Force veteran, calling him a ‘100% disabled’ kickboxer and suggesting he claims this status to evade property taxes. Despite his disability, De La Cruz operates a kickboxing gym and works as a volunteer carpenter.

Charlotte Neiner, an Air Force veteran, condemned the ads, calling them disgraceful, especially before Memorial Day. She stressed that Lujan’s team is unfairly attacking De La Cruz, a fellow veteran.

Neiner emphasized that Lujan, who has no military experience, lacks understanding of the implications of veterans’ injuries. She stated that Lujan ‘will not get my vote’ and asserted her support for De La Cruz.

Under Texas law, veterans with a 100% disability rating are exempt from property taxes on their primary residence. Estimates indicate over 164,000 Texas veterans benefit from this exemption.

Lujan and De La Cruz are preparing for a runoff on Tuesday, as neither candidate reached the 50% vote needed for nomination. In previous voting, Lujan led with 32%, while De La Cruz garnered 27%. Prominent endorsements include Trump’s support for De La Cruz and Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s backing of Lujan.

The Democratic primary in the district is equally turbulent, with Maureen Galindo attracting criticism for aggressive remarks about ‘American Zionists.’
