Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian experienced a challenging yet thrilling night on Saturday. The team trailed 23-3 in the third quarter but mounted a remarkable comeback to defeat Ohio State 24-23.
Sarkisian displayed visible frustration with the halftime and postgame interview processes. The ESPN broadcast caught him running through the tunnel, pursued by sideline reporter Laura Rutledge. With Texas down 20-3, Rutledge explained Sarkisian’s hesitation, citing technical delays that prolonged his wait for the interview.
I do want to make sure we clear something up. (Sarkisian) did decline the interview at the half. He had waited a long time, been very patient with some technical issues that we had. He apologized to us. We should be apologizing to him, which we did.
After Texas clinched the victory, attempts by ESPN’s Holly Rowe to interview Sarkisian resulted in a brief exchange. Sarkisian quickly stated, “Texas fight, hook ‘em,” before heading back to the locker room. This brief comment sparked varied reactions on the internet.
In the game, Arch Manning contributed with 195 passing yards and a touchdown pass in the comeback victory. Hollywood Smothers added to the offense with two rushing touchdowns and 74 yards on the ground.
On the opposing side, Ohio State’s Julian Sayin recorded 278 passing yards with a touchdown and an interception. Jeremiah Smith was noteworthy for his 164 receiving yards on eight catches, including a touchdown.
