Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico recently made headlines when he was asked to name his favorite drag queen in the state. Without hesitation, he named Alyssa Edwards, a performer known for working with children. Such statements have been pivotal in Talarico’s race, as past remarks on gender and sexuality have been controversial. For instance, he previously said, ‘God is nonbinary’ and praised Texas for having ‘some of the best drag queens.’
This latest incident was captured at a campaign event where a supporter acknowledged Talarico’s defense of drag performances. A video shows the supporter asking Talarico about his favorite drag queen, to which Talarico responded swiftly with Alyssa Edwards, the stage name of Justin Dwayne Lee Johnson. Johnson is noted for advocating youth drag shows and teaching dance to young performers.
In a related instance, reports highlighted a 2021 event called Taylor PRIDE where a young boy performed in drag. Johnson has also gained attention for his work with young dancers, as featured in the 2018 Netflix series ‘Dancing Queen.’ A Dallas Observer article recounted how Johnson once referred to a young student as his ‘mini-me.’
Though Talarico’s campaign has faced criticism over these associations, they have deflected some attacks by turning the spotlight onto his Republican opponent. Talarico’s spokesperson, JT Ennis, responded by criticizing Ken Paxton, his Republican rival, for alleged misconduct while serving as attorney general.
Talarico recently addressed his prior comments on gender, noting they were not received as intended. He clarified that he no longer holds certain views he had expressed, such as the existence of six sexes. He suggested that these old remarks are being revisited by critics to divert discussions from economic issues like fuel prices.
