Texas Tech Quarterback Seeks Injunction Against NCAA Amid Gambling Scandal
A district court judge in Lubbock, Texas, will hear a case involving Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby. His legal team seeks an injunction against the NCAA to allow Sorsby to play in the upcoming season after admitting to extensive gambling activities. The case has garnered significant attention within the college athletics community.
Documents from the Lubbock district court, as obtained by OutKick, reveal that Sorsby’s attorneys are leveraging a medical diagnosis from an Arizona rehabilitation center as part of their argument. On Friday, they provided the court with evidence detailing how Sorsby managed to place a large number of bets while attending Indiana, Cincinnati, and Texas Tech.
According to a detailed affidavit, Sorsby placed bets totaling around $90,000 over four years. Starting with his first year at Indiana, Sorsby used various betting apps, including FanDuel and Hard Rock Bet, to make these wagers. He also admitted to enlisting help from friends to place bets on numerous sports, such as the NBA and MLB.

The NCAA has ruled Sorsby ineligible for the 2026 season due to gambling violations. Sorsby’s court filing states he never bet against his team’s success and ceased gambling before participating in any of Indiana’s games.
Supporting Sorsby, Texas Tech argues for a two-game suspension as a suitable penalty. The university believes this approach would encourage athletes facing gambling addictions to seek help rather than face maximum sanctions.
Sorsby’s case stems from a tip-off to the NCAA, which uncovered his gambling activities. He recently completed a rehabilitation program in Arizona and continues to receive support from Texas Tech.
Now, the collegiate sports community awaits the district court’s decision, which could have far-reaching implications. Trey Wallace reports on these developments for OutKick.
