Thailand plans to reduce the duration of visa-free stays for tourists from several nations, including the United States. The government announced the change on Tuesday.
Previously, visitors from 54 countries could stay in Thailand for up to 60 days without a visa. Now, they are limited to 30 days according to Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Since 2024, travelers from over 90 nations enjoyed extended visa-free stays as part of Thailand’s efforts to boost tourism post-pandemic. In 2025, about 33 million foreign tourists visited Thailand, whereas nearly 40 million did so in 2019, based on data from the Bank of Thailand.
The new policy applies to citizens of the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Singapore, and other countries. The Thai Embassy in Washington confirmed the policy but did not provide reasons. However, the Bangkok Post suggested concerns about unauthorized businesses and crime by foreigners.
The policy will be implemented 15 days after publication in The Royal Gazette, Thailand’s public journal. The exact date of publication is not confirmed. Tourists currently in Thailand are allowed to stay until their authorized period expires.
Citizens from countries not included in the new 30-day program will encounter various rules such as a 15-day exemption for three Indian Ocean island nations and visas on arrival for citizens of four countries including India.
Travelers needing a visa can apply through Thailand’s online visa portal.
