The Impact of Streaming and Technology on Music Culture
Music today can reach global audiences almost instantly, thanks to streaming technology. The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) reported that in 2025, global recorded music revenue hit a record $31.7 billion, with streaming accounting for over 69 percent. However, this impressive growth raises a concern about the cultural implications: Is the expansion of music leading to a dwindling of its cultural roots?
Music and Its Local Roots
The primary threat facing music is not artificial intelligence, but an industry favoring scale over cultural significance. Metrics like streams, engagement rates, and viral status have become synonymous with success. Yet, they fail to measure if the music fosters a movement, strengthens a community, or reshapes generational perspectives.
Historically, music has thrived as deeply local before gaining global presence. Jazz from New Orleans, Motown from Detroit, hip-hop from the Bronx, and grunge from Seattle all grew from local communities. Streaming has created opportunities; IFPI reported 837 million paid subscription accounts worldwide in 2025, with revenue growth across all regions. Technology has enabled artists to cross borders without the need for large distribution networks.
Optimization and Familiarity
While streaming provides access, it doesn’t ensure discovery. Success filtered by engagement metrics shifts focus to what performs at scale. Artists learn to attract clicks, companies focus on keeping listeners engaged, and algorithms recommend familiar content. This optimization favors familiarity over discovery.
Potential consequences include music becoming a vast marketplace with almost endless choice while directing listeners to familiar genres. Local venues may weaken, emerging artists may lose places to experiment, and regional scenes may struggle to gather momentum. Despite unparalleled access to music, the distinct communities that nurture new sounds risk being overlooked.
Role of Artificial Intelligence
AI might exacerbate this pressure by lowering production barriers and providing creative tools. However, the real issue lies with technology following industry incentives for engagement, scale, and efficiency.
Massive scale must not come at the expense of cultural identity. The industry should develop a digital economy that promotes local culture rather than diminishing it. Global platforms should act as gateways to emerging sounds, offering exposure to unique local music like that from Detroit or Seoul.
Enhancing Cultural Identity
A significant industry change is essential. Streaming platforms should allocate at least 10 percent of editorial placements to local emerging artists and report these metrics regularly. Local programmers, venues, and music communities should guide discovery instead of relying only on centralized metrics.
The percentage can be adjusted, but the commitment to cultural development should be standard. The future of music lies not in resisting technology, but in deciding what we want technology to enhance. Algorithms might predict our next choice, but communities create unprecedented sounds.
